When I was at university, I was quite angry and rebellious about having to pay my TV licence. To me it seemed like a stupid tax on something just just tries to sell me stuff all the time.
Then after studying Noam Chomsky work for a while I started to realise really why we have it and why it's needed. Not only for England, but now for the whole world.
The thing that really stode out for me a illustarted why it was needed was American Television, basically every chanel is funding by the advertising. Anything that come on telly is based on home many people watch it or apparently how likely the people watching are to buy stuff (they actually proved that intellectaul television programme viewer have much lower sales). So not only is the televsion dumb down considerable so not to alienant anyone but their is a much worse sideeffect, censorship.
If you watch American News the advertsier actually have power over what news is shown, if say their was a big news story about how unsafe BMW cars were then the massive corperator which owns BMW and 50 other brands would turn around and tell chanels that they would pull their adverts if the story was covered, so hay persto the story isn't covered.
I still remeber a interview with Jeremy Clackson, when he said that Top gear couldn't be made anywhere else but the BBC for the simple reason that on any other channel, they couldn't go 'This is car is Shit' because they would lose their advertisers.
So for all the shit that gone on, I totally back the BBC and when ever you complain about the TV licence I urge you to think of a world without the BBC.
